British diver Tom Daley is to make a documentary on surrogacy for the BBC next year
The working title of the film will be Surrogacy and has been commissioned following the birth of Tom’s son, Robbie Ray, with husband, Dustin Lance Black earlier this year.
The aim of the documentary is to explore the US surrogacy system, where commercial surrogacy is legal and the UK system, in which only altruistic surrogacy is legal and discuss what options and legal stance holds for the future.
He will meet women who decided to become surrogates and their feelings behind the decision, parents and those who are fiercely opposed to surrogacy.
Tom McDonald, BBC Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual, said: “Surrogacy is one of the most complex issues in modern society and the laws which govern it are radically different across the world.
“As new fathers through surrogacy, Tom and Lance are both committed to exploring all of the nuances around this very emotive subject.
The film, with the working title Surrogacy, is set to air in 2019.
